Nearly a century old forest bungalow perched within the deep forests of Jhargram takes you on a time-travel experience to the days of Gora Sahibs and their hunting trips. Tariff: Rs.2500 per head with food
Built by Anglo Indian settler Mrs. Elizabeth Franz in 1938, this Forest Bungalow was later secured by the illustrious Gupta family (erstwhile Zamindars from Dhaka) in 1958 after most of the members of the Anglo Indian community went abroad.
Accommodation at Jhargram Forest Bungalow
The bungalow is built on four acres of orchard within the Jhitshal Forest beat and is surrounded by countless trees of Sal, Teak, Palash, Mango, Cashew, Jackfruit, Jamun, Guava, Custard Apple and many more. The forest bungalow comprises two wings, where the First Wing which was built in 1938, accommodates the Sitting Room and the kitchen and lounge and the Second Wing, which was built in 1958 accommodates the Guest Bedrooms. The Second Wing is a two-storey building wherein 01 Triple Bedroom is located on the Ground Floor and 02 Double Bedrooms are located on First Floor. However, we only host one group at a time, and at-the-most seven guests can stay with us. All modern amenities like Air Conditioners, western bathrooms, geysers and limited power back-up is available in our rooms. Guests are served sumptuous home-cooked Bengali food where most of the ingredients are locally sourced.
How to reach Jhargram Forest Bungalow
Our Bungalow is located on the road connecting Jhargram with Lodhasuli Jungle. The bungalow is more than a kilometre from the nearest village with shops where you can buy essential groceries, vegetables and toiletries. The nearest town is Jhargram, which is around 12 kms away.
Attractions at Jhargram Forest Bungalow
The major sightseeing option here is the Jhargram Rajbari, which is a stunning heritage palace in Italianate style, built in 1931. It is the residence of the Malla Deb royal family, with parts converted into a heritage hotel. Its lush grounds and architecture are captivating. Then comes the Junglemahal Zoological Park, spanning over 22 hectares, this zoological park (formerly a deer park) is home to over 300 animals across 51 species, including tigers, deer, birds, reptiles, and more. The Tribal Interpretation Centre (Bandorbhola) set within a Sal forest showcases tribal art and culture. The nearby Chilkigarh and centuries-old Kanak Durga Temple located beside the snaking Dulung River is the largest sacred grove in West Bengal, preserving biodiversity and religious heritage. Also, the Mayurjharna Elephant Reserve spanning over 400 square kms and covering various parts of Jhargram supports a growing elephant population in protected forest blocks across Jhargram. Also, around 35 kms away is Belpahari – a tranquil tribal valley forested with Sal, Teak and Mahua which guards the Ghagra Waterfall. The Kankrajhor Forest, Gadrasini Hill and Ashram and the pristine Khandarani Lake are all within a two-hours drive from our bungalow.
Activities at Jhargram Forest Bungalow
Here you can venture into the forests around our bungalow for bird-watching and nature walks. Enjoy a stroll and interact with local villagers, explore small forest lakes, and enjoy the simplicity of rural life. The evenings often come alive with tribal dances and folk music that reflect the region’s rich cultural heritage. In summers, when the mangoes and jack fruits are ripe and ready in our orchard, then occasional courtesy visits are made by pachyderms. In our Jhargram forest bungalow, you can also enjoy a barbecue filled evening or a simple bonfire under the starry night and the deep dark forest.
